Leaping into Spring

By Eleanor, Books Editor

As a new season springs into action, things are heating up at Duncan Petersen. Following the successful release of Walker's Britain in a Box in November 2018, we'll also be publishing Walker's Scotland in a Box in May this year. This new edition includes 35 walks covering everything from the bustling city of Edinburgh to the challenging Highland hills, even incorporating a weekend getaway to the Isle of Skye. We anticipate this will be one our best-selling walking guides, available to buy from May 2019 in WHSmith's and Amazon among other shops selling books in the English language. You will also be able to buy them directly from our office by contacting 020 7720 1692 or emailing

On our Charming Small Hotels website, over the past six months we have welcomed a number of exciting new hotels, including Tbe Broadford in the Isle of Skye, Widbrook Grange in Bradford on Avon, Forss House in Thurso, Shieldaig Lodge in Gairloch and The Cricket Inn in Beesands. We have also added Santo Stefano in Venice and Palacio Stunnis Charme B&B in Ostuni to our stunning catalogue of Italian hotels thanks to our Web Editor, Viktoriya Petrova. This month, she celebrated six months at the company and her graphic design skills have made huge improvements to the quality of our social media promotions.

Another landmark occasion - in November 2018 our Books Editor, Eleanor Pyne, celebrated one year at Duncan Petersen! Having spent her first eight months as the Web Editor, Eleanor has spent the last six months immersing herself in all things print and has overseen the publication of Walker's Britain in a Box, a reprint of one of our best-sellers Great Pub, Great Walk in a Box and the production of our latest release Walker's Scotland in a Box.

She is also working on an exciting new project which will be published in September this year... watch this space!

Out with the old...

By Eleanor, Books Editor

As summer turns to autumn, it's all change at Duncan Petersen too! We are sad to say goodbye to our beloved Books Editor, Ella Carr who, over her 15 month stint with us, had the mammoth task of overseeing the publication of the new Florence Walks guide. The result is a stunningly designed and beautifully written walking companion and with her knowledge and passion for art, this is the perfect accompaniment for art lovers looking for a break in Florence.

Ella was also responsible for publishing the 18th edition of our Charming Small Hotel Guides: Britain & Ireland guide, with 51 new hotels to add to our collection. Mirroring the other guides in the series, Britain & Ireland now has a beautiful new cover and major updates but maintains our core values: objectivity, honesty, and absolutely no gushing!

Our Web Editor, Eleanor Pyne, will be taking over the reigns as Ella's replacement and will be perfecting the soon-to-be-published Walker's Britain in a Box, as well as working on producing an edition of Walker's Scotland in a Box. Eleanor will also be picking up where Ella left off with an exciting new project we've been working on - we're keeping this one under wraps for now!

We are also thrilled to welcome our new Web Editor, Viktoriya Petrova, to the Battersea office. Over the last six months, we have seen our Google rankings improve and have maintained a consistently good viewership on our website. With lots of ideas in store already, we expect that Viktoriya will be a valuable addition to our team, and that our website will continue to thrive.

It's the most wonderful time of the beer

This year we have created something a bit different. Forget the walking, forget the hotels, we have a brand new, unique guide on micropubs. Don't know what a micropub is? Get on the the band wagon of these small, real ale focused, no nonsense pubs. Our guide is colourful and full of anecdotes. Even if you're not a beer drinker we think that this guide will make you at least want to try one. With the authors Mat Hardy and Dan Murray we have travelled up and down the country visiting these quirky one off places and tasting a few beers on the way.

We do also have a new boxed walking guide available in March which takes you around some of the lesser known parts (if these exist) of the Lake District from flat coast walks to scrambles along crags. We've had great fun in the office pouring over OS maps to find the most exciting and interesting walks, most of which include wild swim opportunities. Books and guides editor Natasha then made two trips to the area to test them out (an amazing few days of walking but with plenty of concentration required).

Last year we also reprinted London and New York ON FOOT which have been hugely popular and are great ways to explore these two cities as if guided by a local. Why don't you order a copy today for yourself or someone you know? Useful year round and for any occasion. Call us on 020 7720 1692 for discount and quick delivery.

Winter blues? Look ahead!

It's that time of year when (festive cheer aside) we are getting a bit tired of the short days, the grey skies and the endless drizzle. So at Duncan Petersen we're thinking ahead to the spring. We've just finished the newest addition to our In a Box series – Cycle Escapes London is a brilliant new guide showcasing original cycling routes in and around the capital, endorsed by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London. Due to hit the shelves in March 2016, we believe that it will give London's growing hoards of cyclists some splendid spring days out.

If you fancy a trip further afield, we are busily updating Charming Small Hotels: Germany and Charming Small Hotels: Spain. They have new, redesigned covers, updated pictures and a selection of new charming hotels. There's nothing like planning a holiday to flush out the winter blues.

Another new title is 150 Great Walks, created by our current editor, Helen Fanthorpe. This collection of themed walks in a loose-leaf binder has been on sale since August, and is doing nicely.

With the new year also comes some changes to the team at Duncan Petersen. As we prepare to say goodbye to our current editors, we look forward to welcoming Natasha Lodge as books editor and Giulia Sgarbi as web editor. On the website, our outgoing web editor Tom Fleming has significantly improved our rankings on social media – keep a look out for Charming Travel on facebook and Twitter.

New editor, new book

By Helen, Books Editor

A new book editor and another new Charming Small Hotel Guide at Duncan Petersen!
With the finishing touches being made to our 14th edition of Charming Small Hotels: France, it has been a very exciting time to join the team in Battersea. Matching the other guides in the series relaunch, France now has a beautiful new cover and major updates, as well as 500 hotels – that's over 150 new hotels! Our coverage is now unrivalled, but our values remain the same: independent reviews favouring small hotels with real charm.

Thinking about a french summer holiday or simply a weekend break? CSH France is now available for pre-order with a large discount – call us on 020 7720 1692 or email me at for details.

We are also pleased to say that Charming Small Hotels: Austria, Switzerland & the Alps has gone digital, and is now available on eReaders and Kindle from Kobo and Amazon. There's still time to hit the ski slopes before summer!

It's holiday time... all the time.

By Alex, Books Editor

We really hope that with all this fine weather people have been out and about: walking, cycling and generally enjoying themselves. It's summers like this that make you wonder whether holidaying in Britain is really as bad as we all suppose – well, we know that it's still pretty popular, as the new edition of Charming Small Hotels: Britain & Ireland, which came out in April this year, has been flying off the shelves.

Whether you're looking for an upmarket country house hotel, or a simple B&B on your travels, you're sure to find something up your street here. Perfect for a quick getaway or a long weekend, Char, the author of Love from Cornwall blog, found just that – she stayed at The Headland Hotel in Newquay at our recommendation; here's what she wrote:

Why don't you order a copy today for yourself or someone you know? Useful year round and for any occasion. Call us on 020 7720 1692 for discount and quick delivery.

We've been working really hard to get our hotel guides launched on more platforms, and are pleased to announce that Charming Small Hotels: Italy and Britain & Ireland are available for sale on eReaders and Kindle from Kobo and Amazon. The new ePub of Austria, Switzerland & the Alps will soon be joining them. Watch this space.
